A fractional CTO: senior technical leadership embedded in your team, billed monthly rather than hired.
01 — What this is

You have a product, a team and no one senior enough to say which of the three arguments in the room is right. That is the job, and it does not need a full-time salary.

In the room.
On the tools.
On your side.

Eleven years building and shipping, most of it as the person accountable for the call. You get the judgement, the architecture and the hiring bar — without a hundred-and-forty-thousand-pound commitment and a three-month search.

02 — What the job is

The decisions nobody else
in the room can make

ArchitectureWhat to build on, what to buy, and what you will regret in eighteen months.
The roadmapWhat ships next, what gets cut, and how to tell your board why.
HiringWriting the spec, sitting the interviews, setting the bar and holding it.
Code reviewStill in the pull requests. A CTO who has stopped reading code stops being useful.
Vendors and costWhat you are paying for, what you are not using, and what the bill will be at ten times the traffic.
The awkward conversationThe rewrite that is not worth it. The hire that is not working. The date that will not hold.

Not all of it every week. The point of the arrangement is that you get the right hours on the right problem, not a seat filled five days a week.

03 — Who it's for

Three rooms we end up in

If none of these is you, say so and we'll tell you straight.

Funded, no CTO You raised on a plan The deck promised a product and the board is asking when. You need someone accountable for the technical answer before the next meeting, not after a three-month search.
Agency-built You inherited a codebase It works, nobody knows why, and the people who wrote it have moved on. Someone has to read it, say what it is worth keeping, and own what happens next.
Growing team You have developers, no lead Three good engineers and no one to break a tie, set the bar or sit the interviews. Often the cheapest hire you can make is the one you only make is the one you do not make full-time.
04 — How it goes

From a first call
to being in the room.

Month to month. Cancel with thirty days, no exit fee, no lock-in.

  1. 1

    A call, not a pitch

Half an hour on what you're building and what's stuck. Free, and often the answer is that you don't need this yet.

  2. 2

    Two weeks reading

The codebase, the infrastructure bill, the backlog and the team. You get the findings in writing whether or not we carry on.

  3. 3

A plan with dates on it

What to fix now, what to leave, what to hire for and in what order. Costed, so your board can read it too.

  4. 4

    Then we're in the room

Standups, reviews, interviews and the awkward calls. One or two days a week, on your calendar, not on a retainer nobody uses.

  5. 5

We work ourselves out of it

The point is a team that no longer needs us. When that happens we say so rather than quietly staying on the invoice.

05 — The arithmetic

What the hire actually costs

Salary is about two thirds of it. Move the sliders to your own numbers — nothing here is sent anywhere.

Full-time CTO — annual salary €110,000
Fractional CTO — what we own Advisory
Fractional CTO — monthly retainer €2,500/mo
Full-time CTO, annual
Fractional CTO, annual
You save

Illustrative estimate based on your own numbers — not a binding offer. Advisory is €2,500 a month, Embedded €5,000, and the bespoke tier is quoted on the scope — shown here at €10,000. A flat fee whichever it is: no overage, no timesheets, thirty days’ notice.

06 — The rate

Priced to the engagement

Priced on what we are accountable for rather than on days in a diary — counting days turns a technical lead into a contractor with a timesheet, and that is the opposite of what this is. Two of these are fixed, the third is quoted on its scope. Some weeks you will use every hour, some weeks none. The invoice is the same.
