Fractional CTO
What does a fractional CTO cost in the UK?
Nobody publishes this for the UK. Search for it and you get American rate cards, or fractional CFO pages that the search engine has substituted because no British CTO equivalent exists. So here are the numbers, with where they come from and when they were measured.
Six months to 29 September 2026. Drawn from 17 quoted day rates across 20 advertised positions — a small sample, and worth treating as an indication rather than a benchmark. Source: ITJobsWatch.
What that works out at monthly
A day rate is not a retainer, and most fractional arrangements are not billed by the day. But it is the only public, dated UK figure there is, so it is the honest place to start. The arithmetic below is mine, from that one input:
| Commitment | At £625/day | What it buys |
|---|---|---|
| One day a week | ~£2,700/month | Advisory. Reviews, hiring input, a second opinion on architecture. |
| Two days a week | ~£5,400/month | Actual technical leadership. Roadmap, the team, the hard calls. |
| Three days a week | ~£8,100/month | Near-full ownership. Usually a rebuild or a crisis. |
Real retainers cluster a little below those figures, because a monthly commitment is worth something to the person on the other side of it and most of us price it accordingly. Advisory work starts around £2,500 a month. Genuinely embedded work runs to £8,000 and up.
What I charge, since nobody else will say
£100 an hour under ten hours a week, £75 between ten and twenty, £50 above twenty. The rate falls as the commitment rises, which is the opposite of how consultancies usually price and the right way round: the more of my week you hold, the less risk I am carrying. The entry retainer is £2,500 a month. Everything is on the fractional CTO page.
One thing in the data worth knowing
UK contract CTO day rates fell 30.6% year on year — the same six-month window in 2025 showed a £900 median. Over the same period, UK contract software developer rates rose 5.0%, to a £525 median from a much larger sample (254 rates across 430 adverts).
Two readings. Either leadership contracting genuinely repriced this year while delivery did not, or seventeen data points moved around and there is no signal in it. I lean towards the second, because the sample is tiny and a handful of high-paying interim mandates leaving the market would produce exactly this. Either way, if someone quotes you a UK fractional CTO rate anchored on 2025 figures, that is worth a question.
The comparison that actually decides it
The real question is rarely what a fractional CTO costs. It is what the alternative costs. Median UK permanent CTO salary in the same six months was £100,000 (ITJobsWatch, 59 salaries from 73 adverts — a sturdier sample than the contract one). That is the salary, not the cost:
| First year, full-time hire | Amount |
|---|---|
| Salary (UK median) | £100,000 |
| Employer National Insurance at 15% above £5,000 | £14,250 |
| Pension, 3–5% | £3,000–5,000 |
| Recruitment, typically 20–25% of salary | £20,000–25,000 |
| First-year cash | £137,000–144,000 |
Two days a week of a fractional CTO at market rates is about £65,000 a year. Less than half. And that is before the part nobody prices: if the hire is wrong, you find out at month four and it takes another quarter to unwind. A retainer you can end with a month's notice does not carry that.
The full build-up, including what changes in year two, is on the comparison page.
For reference: the US numbers
Most of what you will find online is American, so it is worth knowing what it says. Go Fractional, which computes from live marketplace data on a rolling 90-day window (updated 29 September 2026, 15 job posts and 811 candidate profiles), puts the median fractional CTO rate at $200 an hour, with typical monthly retainers of $9,600–15,000. A.Team's guide, which publishes no methodology, gives $4,000–10,000 a month for advisory and $10,000–25,000 for active fractional work.
US figures run materially higher than UK ones. Do not let an American rate card set your expectation of a British quote, in either direction.

Recruitment and pension percentages are typical practice rather than measured averages.
